Disentangling Internal and External Contributions to Atlantic Multidecadal Variability Over the Past Millennium

چکیده
The Atlantic multidecadal variability (AMV) modulates the North surface ocean and affects decadal climates over globe; its underlying mechanisms remain, however, under debate. In this study, we use a multi-model ensemble of transient past-millennium (850–1849) unperturbed preindustrial control simulations contributing to paleoclimate modeling intercomparison project—phase 4 (PMIP4) decompose AMV signal into internal external signal. component exhibits no robust behavior across during periods major forcing such as strong volcanic eruptions, whereas forced temperature responds eruptions with an immediate radiative cooling followed, in some simulations, by sequence damped oscillations. tightly relates meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) dominates fluctuations AMV; has limited impacts on AMOC explains ?25% variance past millennium.

Late Holocene climate in western North America was punctuated by periods of extended aridity called megadroughts. These droughts have been linked to cool eastern tropical Pacific sea surface temperatures (SSTs). Here, we show both short-term and long-term climate variability over the last 1,500 y from annual band thickness and stable isotope speleothem data. Several megadroughts are evident, in...

This study investigates the contributions of Atlantic Ocean to June-August rainfall over Uganda and western Kenya (KU). The study has utilized the datasets including precipitation from the Global Precipitation Climatology Centre, North Atlantic Oscillation Index (NAOI), South Atlantic Ocean Dipole Index (SAODI), ERA-interim reanalysis, and the Atlantic Ocean Sea Surface Temperature (SST). Singu...

Reconstructions of past climate show notable temperature variability over the past millennium, with relatively warm conditions during the Medieval Climate Anomaly (MCA) and a relatively cold Little Ice Age (LIA). Multimodel simulations of the past millennium are used together with a wide range of reconstructions of Northern Hemispheric mean annual temperature to separate climate variability fro...
متن کاملPredictability of North Atlantic Multidecadal Climate Variability
Atmospheric weather systems become unpredictable beyond a few weeks, but climate variations can be predictable over much longer periods because of the coupling of the ocean and atmosphere. With the use of a global coupled ocean-atmosphere model, it is shown that the North Atlantic may have climatic predictability on the order of a decade or longer. These results suggest that variations of the d...
